Dream Feeder...

Updated: Nov 5, 2019

I know you can get me through the night ! Sorry I have a that song stuck in my head. It is Dream Weaver, from Waynes World, again showing age. But when I wanted to write this blog , it would not stop playing on repeat. And it does fit oh so nicely in to this blog as dream feeding has got me through the night and my wee woman's too. I not saying that to show off, oh look at my baby , I just know that A- mums need to know that it does exist, a whole nights sleep. And B- that your baby can do it too. This is just one of many way to achieve that. Dream feeding , I have been practising it and helping mums with it for over 25 years and it is what works for me and them. We all need to share information. It might work for you too.

So what I do is for the first couple of weeks , what ever the/my baby wants but I write down , sleep times and feeding times and slowly as you settle in a pattern emerges. It is fluid and thats the point. If you relax and just see what your baby is doing then nights become less stressful. Its hard because you're supposed to know what you're doing , feel pressure to be doing this that and the other and like above there is always some kid that is sleeping through the night and yours isn't and that puts added pressure and you are so tired you can't see straight and you are sick of everyone telling you what to do and.................

We have all been there.

This little top up for her seems to see her through the night , till 6 is when she doesn't quite wake but tells me she needs another top up. We repeat cycle and she sleeps on till whenever depending on our days scheduling. The thinking and science behind the dream feed is to top them up without waking them up. I don't wait till she fully wakes and then needs to be resettled. Im hoping that giving her that bit more last thing at night allows her to link her sleep cycles. As a nanny I suggested this to mums and then when the children are older , if they wake to given them a bottle of water to sip on. They soon realise its not worth waking up for and sleep through. The dream feed can be bottle or breast. And done for both you and your baby convenience. It can be written in to the night time routine, bath, new nappy , as you won't be changing them in the night , bed bottle or breast. Take note when they are waking in the night, is it for comfort or food? If you upped the bottle or dream feed would it get them over that hump and go longer. If you are having to get them up, make sure you don't fully wake them, nappy change in very dimmed light. Feed in the dark. You will both go back to sleep faster. From the smell . I do both sides, burp , extra long cuddle as I know these times go so fast and she has a super soft head that is sleepy and tucked in to my neck ! Then in to her cot thats at present next to me . When she goes in to her own room this will all be conducted in a rocking chair .

Now I know that its trial and error, that this may not or won't work for you and your family, and thats ok, but I hope that this or something else does. We as mums have so much on our plates and we run on empty so much, either in finding time to have a shower or even eat, that lack of sleep is , most of us think or know, is inevitable. But it doesn't have to be. With a bit of observation, both you and baby can find your rhythm and work together to get through it. Get through the night .
