Lazy Baby Weaning

Updated: Nov 5, 2019

Tis that time in a baby and mothers life when, before it was just milk and minimal mess. Now its time to feed them solid foods and boy is it everywhere, on me, on her , on the floor, on the high chair , on the bib, spoon, bowl and table legs , not sure how she managed to get it there but she did and we are only week in. You see I am treading the tightrope between the schools of thought of purees vs newly coined baby led weaning. I as a nanny hate that term for two reasons , we have been doing it for eons and not calling it anything in particular and someone smart arse comes along writes down what we are doing and coins the term and coins it literally as there are books and money being made about what we have been doing the whole time. Vent over .... Could have made a mint !! Nope I'll stop.

Lazy Baby Weaning I have coined it ( hoping to get that book deal ) it treads between the two as in wee one get the spoon for things that hands can't grasp , i.e., yogurts and porridge , baby rice , etc. It gets flavoured with half a squished piece of fruit , uncooked. And the other half of the fruit is offered via my hand to bubs which she guides in to her mouth hence the lazy baby ... We are a week in and it's going well , she is getting the hang of swallowing and picking up bits and putting them into her mouth , like peanut butter / avocado / hummus toast and pancakes cut up. There is no puree or pouches or jars. Soon, maybe next week we will move on the steamed veg that is cut in to sticks and small pieces so she can experiment, broccoli florets and carrot sticks are good for this. Then she will get cut up ' what ever ' we are having , be it pasta , cottage pie, fish , and her favourite roasted chicken, all broken up in to smaller bits thats she then gums to death and we watch her like a hawk for choking . Ps, if you are going to follow this path get educated about choking vs gagging as they are different and one can lead to another if bubs is interfered with. .

This is path I have chosen, it works for me , my baby , my family. My suggestion is read up on the various schools of thought, talk to other mums, and make you own meals as such. They can be tailored exactly to your babies tastes, your diet and or any allergies that are in the family. Everyone's experience is different and right ! Bon appetite x
